New Delhi: Condemning what it describes as excessive force, the Supreme Court Bar Association has urged Chief Justice of India Surya Kant to intervene over the detention of lawyers by Delhi Police and Central forces, among them senior and young advocates and particularly women lawyers, who it says were peacefully protesting near the Supreme Court [Detention of advocates near the Supreme Court on October 10].
The march, as reported
A media report says a group of lawyers holding a protest march against the Chief Election Commissioner and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls was detained near the Supreme Court by Delhi Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel. As per that report, the lawyers had covered about 100 yards when they were put into a bus and taken to an unknown location. Their names and number, and whether and when they were released, have not been reported.
What the SCBA has said
The Association, whose President is Senior Advocate Pradeep Rai, has asked the Chief Justice to step in and has condemned the use of what it describes as excessive force against advocates. Details of its communication have not been made public. These are the Association’s allegations and have not been tested.
The wider backdrop
The detentions come on the day of the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest against the Chief Election Commissioner at Jantar Mantar, when detentions were reported across Delhi. Delhi Police has described the detentions in the city as preventive, citing public safety and traffic management, and the Election Commission has denied wrongdoing in the revision. Neither Delhi Police nor the Central forces have been reported to have responded to the SCBA’s allegations.
