New Delhi: Following representations from the Supreme Court Bar Association and the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant has communicated to the authorities that the lawyers detained during a protest march near the Supreme Court should be released, a media report says. The lawyers are expected to be released soon, though release had not been confirmed at the time of the report [Detention of advocates near the Supreme Court on October 10].
Held near the Court
The advocates were marching in protest against the Chief Election Commissioner and the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls near the Supreme Court when they were taken to the Yamuna Sports Complex. The number and names of the lawyers have not been reported. Delhi Police and the Central forces have not been reported to have made any statement on the detentions or on the alleged use of force, and the allegations are untested. The Election Commission has denied wrongdoing in the revision.

Representations to the Chief Justice
That morning, the Supreme Court Bar Association wrote urgently to the Chief Justice and passed a resolution, drawing attention to the:
“excessive use of force against the lawyers, including women advocates.”
Advocate Devvrat, President of the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association, later brought the matter to the Chief Justice as well and confirmed that the CJI had asked the authorities to release the lawyers. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has reportedly also intervened in the matter.
