New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday pulled up actor Rajpal Yadav, convicted in seven cheque dishonour cases, for failing to deposit Rs 5 crore despite repeated court orders, and granted him one final opportunity till Tuesday, warning that it was otherwise inclined to simply dismiss his special leave petition against the conviction.
The matter was heard by a Bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana.
‘His arrogance’
Expressing displeasure at the non-compliance, the Bench indicated that its patience so far had been only in the interest of the complainant:
“His arrogance needs to be…We were inclined to ignore the way he is treating this court in order to secure some money for the complainant. Otherwise we want to just dismiss his application.”
The Court then granted Yadav one last chance till the next day to comply.
Rajpal Yadav Case: Background
Yadav was convicted in seven cases arising from the dishonour of cheques. In July 2026, the Delhi High Court sentenced him to three months’ simple imprisonment for repeatedly breaching settlement undertakings and directed him to pay compensation. In September, the Supreme Court exempted him from surrendering, subject to a deposit of Rs 5 crore.
On September 15, the Court gave him a last opportunity to come back with a concrete proposal, including a draft of at least Rs 2 crore, after his counsel sought two weeks and said property would be sold to raise the money. The matter was then listed for October 5.
