Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee has moved the Calcutta High Court challenging the election result from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari defeated Banerjee by 15,105 votes in the seat she had previously represented.
Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee filed an election petition before the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday, contesting the outcome of the Bhabanipur assembly seat where she lost to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.
Adhikari defeated Banerjee by 15,105 votes in the constituency she previously represented.
According to TMC sources, Banerjee went to the court registry to “affirm” the petition challenging the result.
Vote counting for the West Bengal assembly election took place on May 4.
Following the BJP’s significant victory in the West Bengal Assembly polls, Adhikari later became the state’s first BJP chief minister.
In the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the BJP won 207 seats, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule, while the TMC managed to secure 80 seats.
Earlier, West Bengal Ex- Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that she will not resign despite the recent election outcome, asserting that the mandate did not reflect the genuine will of the voters.
Speaking to journalists in Kolkata, Banerjee alleged that the polling process was manipulated and claimed that votes had been forcibly taken away from her party. Maintaining that the Trinamool Congress had not truly been defeated, she accused the Election Commission of acting unfairly and said its conduct had marked a “dark chapter” in the history of Indian democracy.
Addtionally, West Bengal saw a major constitutional twist as Governor R. N. Ravi dissolved the Legislative Assembly under Article 174(2)(b), issuing the order through an official Lok Bhavan press note.
