Justices Aparesh Kumar Singh, Sunita Agarwal and Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, the three new judges who took oath in the Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court’s working strength rose to 37 judges, including the Chief Justice of India, on Tuesday after Justice Sunita Agarwal, Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh took oath as judges of the Court.

The oath was administered by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at the Supreme Court premises.

What the numbers now look like

The Court is now one judge short of its sanctioned strength of 38. Justice Agarwal’s elevation raises the number of women judges on the Bench to three. The Centre notified the appointments after the Collegium’s recommendation of September 28, 2026, which was led by the CJI.

Three Chief Justices, three new seats

Each of the three was a High Court Chief Justice before the elevation. Justice Sunita Agarwal most recently headed the Gujarat High Court, and Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya the Delhi High Court. Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court, after an earlier tenure as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.
