New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued summons in a suit filed by actor Vijay Deverakonda seeking protection of his personality rights against AI-generated content, digital manipulation of his pictures and fake endorsements, and said it will pass an order on his plea for an interim injunction [Vijay Sai Deverakonda v. Ashok Kumar John Doe & Ors].
Justice Vikas Mahajan heard the matter briefly. Senior Advocate Swathi Sukumar appeared for the actor.
The suit
The plaintiff seeks the takedown of fake endorsements and impersonation by persons claiming to be his agents, the sale of merchandise using his images and other personality traits, AI-generated content and digital manipulation of his pictures, and obscene and offensive content. These are the plaintiff’s allegations, and the Court has not tested them.
What happened in Court
The Court issued summons in the suit and notice on the interim injunction application. Justice Mahajan said orally: “I will pass an order.” The terms of the order have not been pronounced yet, so no interim relief has been granted as of the hearing.
Counsel told the Court that some of the offending URLs were taken down after the suit was filed and served.
Why the order matters
The Delhi High Court has in recent months passed personality rights orders for a range of public figures, including actors, cricketers and politicians. The Court’s forthcoming order on the interim injunction will show whether it extends similar protection to this plaintiff against AI-generated content and fake endorsements.
