NEW DELHI: On Monday(29th July), The Supreme Court of India has initiated a Special Lok Adalat week to commemorate its 75th anniversary. This week-long event, which commenced today, aims to address and resolve a significant backlog of cases in an informal and technologically advanced manner.
A total of 315 cases have been scheduled before seven different benches of the Supreme Court. The Special Lok Adalat week will continue until August 2, providing a crucial platform for voluntary and consensual resolution of cases.
In a recently released video message, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized the significance of this initiative.
He stated-
“Most significantly, as individuals committed to justice, we are all judges focused on addressing the significant case backlog. The Lok Adalat offers a highly informal, technology-driven approach to resolving cases, allowing citizens to reach satisfactory outcomes through voluntary and consensual means.”
The first Lok Adalat court session featured prominent figures such as CJI Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, Manoj Misra, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Kapil Sibal, and President of Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) Vipin Nair.
- Court 2 was presided over by Justices Sanjiv Khanna and KV Viswanathan, accompanied by SCBA Vice President Rachna Srivastava and SCAORA Vice President Amit Sharma.
- Court 3 saw Justices BR Gavai and MM Sundresh alongside SCBA Secretary Vikrant Yadav and SCAORA Secretary Nikhil Jain.
- Court 4 included Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan with Senior Advocate VV Giri and Advocate K Parameshwar.
- Court 5 was composed of Justices Hrishikesh Roy and PS Narasimha, along with Senior Advocate PS Patwalia and Advocate Shadan Farasat.
- Court 6 consisted of Justices Abhay S Oka and Dipankar Datta with Senior Advocate Huzefa Ahmadi and Advocate Gaichangpou Gangmei.
- Court 7 featured Justices Vikram Nath and PB Varale, who conducted the proceedings with Senior Advocate Madhavi Divan and Advocate Balaji Srinivasan.
The Supreme Court, in its commitment to address the mounting backlog of cases, had previously issued at least three notices indicating that over 14,000 cases had been identified for consideration during the Special Lok Adalat week.

To facilitate the smooth operation of this initiative, the Court has also provided separate dedicated video conference (VC) links for the Special Lok Adalat. This provision underscores the Court’s dedication to leveraging technology for efficient and effective case resolution.
