Supreme Court Special Lok Adalat Week | 315 Cases to be Heard by Seven Benches Until August 2

NEW DELHI: On Monday(29th July), The Supreme Court of India has initiated a Special Lok Adalat week to commemorate its 75th anniversary. This week-long event, which commenced today, aims to address and resolve a significant backlog of cases in an informal and technologically advanced manner.

A total of 315 cases have been scheduled before seven different benches of the Supreme Court. The Special Lok Adalat week will continue until August 2, providing a crucial platform for voluntary and consensual resolution of cases.

In a recently released video message, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud emphasized the significance of this initiative.

He stated-

“Most significantly, as individuals committed to justice, we are all judges focused on addressing the significant case backlog. The Lok Adalat offers a highly informal, technology-driven approach to resolving cases, allowing citizens to reach satisfactory outcomes through voluntary and consensual means.”

The first Lok Adalat court session featured prominent figures such as CJI Chandrachud, Justices JB Pardiwala, Manoj Misra, Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Kapil Sibal, and President of Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) Vipin Nair.

The Supreme Court, in its commitment to address the mounting backlog of cases, had previously issued at least three notices indicating that over 14,000 cases had been identified for consideration during the Special Lok Adalat week.

To facilitate the smooth operation of this initiative, the Court has also provided separate dedicated video conference (VC) links for the Special Lok Adalat. This provision underscores the Court’s dedication to leveraging technology for efficient and effective case resolution.
