New Delhi: Today (29th July): For the first time, the Supreme Court commenced a special Lok Adalat at 2 pm, allowing media cameras inside courtrooms to facilitate the amicable resolution of disputes. This week-long Lok Adalat, celebrating 75 years of the Supreme Court, aims to settle pending cases with potential for amicable resolution.

Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud announced that the first seven benches would participate in the special Lok Adalat, running until August 3, to help reduce the backlog of cases. During the day’s proceedings, the CJI urged lawyers to bring suitable cases to the Lok Adalat for resolution.
“Starting today and continuing until Friday, the Supreme Court Lok Adalat will be in session with the first seven benches presiding. If lawyers have cases suitable for the Lok Adalat, please bring them forward,” said the CJI at the beginning of the day’s proceedings.
In a prior video message on the court’s website, Justice Chandrachud encouraged citizens with pending Supreme Court cases to participate in the Lok Adalat for speedy, amicable dispute resolution. He highlighted that the Lok Adalat offers an informal, technology-driven method to resolve cases voluntarily and consensually, aiming to alleviate the significant backlog.
“The Lok Adalat offers an informal, technology-driven solution to resolve cases involving citizens in a purely voluntary and consensual manner.
Therefore, on behalf of my colleagues and the Supreme Court staff, I urge all citizens with pending cases and lawyers to take advantage of this opportunity to resolve cases quickly and acceptably for all parties involved,” Justice Chandrachud said.

The Supreme Court emphasized that Lok Adalats are crucial for enhancing alternative dispute resolution, expediting, and fostering amicable settlements. Cases suitable for settlement, such as matrimonial, property, motor accident claims, land acquisition, compensation, and service and labor disputes, will be addressed to ensure swift disposal.
