The Supreme Court of India modified its earlier order and allowed only one candidate to appear in the Rajasthan SI recruitment exam instead of 713 candidates. The Court granted relief to the Rajasthan Public Service Commission and said other candidates can approach the High Court depending on the pending case outcome.

The Supreme Court on Friday modified its earlier order dated April 2 and allowed only one candidate, instead of 713 candidates, to appear in the Rajasthan Sub-Inspector/Platoon Commander Recruitment Examination 2025, which is scheduled to be held on April 5 and 6. This order came as a relief for the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC).

A bench of Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma assembled on a court holiday to hear the urgent matter and decided to change its earlier order passed on Thursday.

The RPSC is conducting the recruitment examination for 1,015 posts of Sub-Inspectors and Platoon Commanders across Rajasthan. Around 7.70 lakh candidates are expected to appear for this examination, making it a large-scale competitive exam in the state.

Earlier, on Thursday, the Supreme Court had directed the RPSC to issue provisional admit cards to 713 candidates, including the main applicant Suraj Mal Meena, who had approached the Court. The Court had also ordered that the results of these candidates should not be declared until the Rajasthan High Court gives its final decision in the pending cases related to this recruitment exam.

However, the RPSC later filed an application before the Supreme Court stating that some important facts were not presented before the Court earlier. After hearing the RPSC’s counsel on Friday, the Supreme Court modified its previous order and restricted the permission to appear in the exam to only Suraj Mal Meena.

The Court also clarified that the remaining candidates, who were not parties before the Supreme Court, can approach the Rajasthan High Court and request permission to appear in the examination later, if the High Court orders the RPSC to conduct another परीक्षा for such candidates.

This recruitment examination has already been surrounded by controversy. Earlier, the Sub-Inspector and Platoon Commander exam was cancelled due to allegations of large-scale irregularities and malpractice. After the cancellation, the RPSC decided to conduct a fresh examination but did not grant age relaxation to candidates who had crossed the age limit due to the delay and cancellation of the previous exam.

Because of the lack of age relaxation, several candidates filed petitions before the Rajasthan High Court, Jaipur Bench. A single-judge bench of the High Court had earlier allowed such candidates to appear provisionally in the exam.

However, this order was later stayed by a division bench of the High Court. After the stay order, one of the affected candidates approached the Supreme Court, which led to the present proceedings.

With the latest order, the Supreme Court has limited the relief to only one candidate while giving liberty to other candidates to approach the Rajasthan High Court depending on the outcome of the pending cases related to the recruitment examination.

This case is important because it affects thousands of candidates and highlights the legal issues related to recruitment exams, age relaxation, and fairness in public employment examinations.
