A Delhi court has granted Sharjeel Imam 10 days of interim bail from March 20 to March 30 to attend his brother’s wedding. Imam is an accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots case, which left 53 people dead and over 700 injured.

A Delhi court has granted interim bail to student activist Sharjeel Imam, who is one of the accused in the 2020 northeast Delhi riots case. The court allowed him to come out of custody for a short period so that he can attend his brother’s wedding later this month.

The order was passed on Monday by Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai. Imam had requested the court to grant him interim bail for six weeks to attend the marriage ceremony in his family. However, after hearing the plea, the court granted partial relief and allowed him to remain on bail for 10 days instead of the requested six weeks.

As per the court’s direction, Sharjeel Imam will be released on interim bail from March 20 to March 30. During this period, he will be permitted to attend and participate in his brother’s wedding and related family functions. After the end of the permitted period, he will be required to surrender before the authorities and return to custody.

Imam had moved the court stating that his presence was important for the wedding ceremony in his family and requested temporary bail so that he could fulfill his family responsibilities. While considering the request, the court took note of the purpose of the plea and granted a limited period of relief.

Sharjeel Imam is one of several people who have been accused in connection with the violence that took place in northeast Delhi in February 2020. The riots occurred during protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC). The protests had spread across many parts of Delhi and other cities at that time.

The violence in northeast Delhi resulted in serious loss of life and property. According to official records, at least 53 people were killed during the riots and more than 700 people were injured. The incidents led to widespread damage to homes, shops, and public property in the affected areas.

Following the violence, several criminal cases were registered by the authorities and investigations were carried out by law enforcement agencies. Multiple chargesheets have been filed against various individuals who were allegedly involved in the riots and related incidents.

Sharjeel Imam, who has been in custody in connection with the case, continues to face charges linked to the riots. The Delhi court’s recent order granting him interim bail is limited to the purpose of attending his brother’s wedding and is valid only for the specific period between March 20 and March 30.

The court’s decision means that Imam will temporarily step out of custody to attend the family event but must return to jail once the 10-day period granted by the court comes to an end.
