CJI Surya Kant refuted a fake caste-related statement posted on X by the handle “@UnreservedMERIT”. He said, “These assertions, which have been fraudulently attributed to me, are entirely baseless and do not reflect my words, views, or character.”

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant issued a strong rebuttal after a fabricated, caste-related statement was shared on social media and falsely attributed to him.

The post appeared on X under the handle “@UnreservedMERIT”, featuring a Hindi quote alongside a photograph of the CJI and the caption “Chief Justice of India.”

The viral message claimed that even after producing IAS officers, IPS officers, the CJI, the President, and the Prime Minister, a community that views itself as oppressed reflected “its own mentality,” and that it was not the fault of Brahmins.

The quote quickly drew widespread reactions online.

Rejecting the claim outright, CJI Surya Kant said he had not made any such remark and that the attribution was false and malicious.

He stated,

“These assertions, which have been fraudulently attributed to me, are entirely baseless and do not reflect my words, views, or character.”

In a stern response, the CJI said the act was an attack on public confidence in the judiciary and on the constitutional values the institution represents. He described the circulation of the fabricated quote as “vile, brazen and mischievous.”

“To manufacture a fictitious quote, and to attribute it to the highest judicial office of the land, is an act of rank dishonesty, deliberate social incitement, and contempt for constitutional values.”

The CJI further warned that those behind creating and spreading the misinformation could face legal action.

He added,

“I am prepared to bring the full might of the law to bear on the perpetrators and ensure that they face the repercussions of their mendacity,”

The Office of the Chief Justice appealed to citizens, media organisations, and social media platforms to not share unverified content.

It urged people to check facts before amplifying misleading claims, stressing the need to avoid misinformation that undermines public trust.
