Centre Approves Appointment of New Chief Justices for Delhi and Bombay High Courts

In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

NEW DELHI: The Centre has approved the appointments of Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and Justice Alok Aradhe as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, as per notifications issued by the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on Tuesday(14th Jan).

The notification regarding Justice Upadhyaya stated: “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, Chief Justice, Bombay High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.”

This transfer follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation made last week.

Justice Upadhyaya, born on June 16, 1965, began his judicial career as an additional judge of the Allahabad High Court in November 2011 and became a permanent judge in August 2013. He was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on July 29, 2023.

His practice primarily focused on Civil and Constitutional matters at the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, particularly in the Lucknow bench.

In May 2007, he was appointed as the Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh and held that position until his elevation to the bench of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. He was appointed as a puisne judge of the Allahabad High Court on November 21, 2011, and took the oath as a permanent judge on August 6, 2013. He became the Senior Judge of the Lucknow Bench on March 28, 2023.

On July 29, 2023, Justice Upadhyaya was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and took the oath of office.

Similarly, the Centre cleared the appointment of Justice Alok Aradhe as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, based on the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation.

The notification stated: “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 222 of the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to transfer Shri Justice Alok Aradhe, Chief Justice, Telangana High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and to direct him to assume charge of the office of the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.”

Born on April 13, 1964, Justice Aradhe started as an additional judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in December 2009 and became a permanent judge in February 2011. He assumed office as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on July 23, 2023.
