Supreme Court Collegium Recommends Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya as Delhi High Court Chief Justice

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was born on June 16, 1965, in Muskarai, District Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his college education at Colvin Taluqdars’ College in Lucknow and graduated with a law degree (LL.B.) from Lucknow University in 1991.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Collegium has put forward a recommendation for Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya to be appointed as the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

During a meeting earlier on 7th Jan, the Collegium suggested that Justice Upadhyaya, who currently serves as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court, be transferred to the Delhi High Court.

If the recommendation is approved by the Central government, Justice Upadhyaya will succeed Justice Vibhu Bakhru, who is presently the acting Chief Justice.

Additionally, in the same meeting, the Collegium recommended that Justice Alok Aradhe be moved from the Telangana High Court to assume the role of Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court.

Currently, the Delhi High Court is operating with 35 judges, whereas its sanctioned strength is 60.

On January 6, the Central government announced the appointment of two advocates, Ajay Digpaul and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, as judges of the High Court. However, they have yet to take their oaths of office.

Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya was born on June 16, 1965, in Muskarai, District Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He completed his college education at Colvin Taluqdars’ College in Lucknow and graduated with a law degree (LL.B.) from Lucknow University in 1991.

He was enrolled as an Advocate on May 11, 1991, and began practicing in the chambers of his father, Shri R.A. Upadhyaya, who had been practicing at the Board of Revenue for the past sixty years, as well as with Shri Mohd Arif Khan and Shri S.K. Kalia, both Senior Advocates.

His practice primarily focused on Civil and Constitutional matters at the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, particularly in the Lucknow bench.

In May 2007, he was appointed as the Chief Standing Counsel for the State of Uttar Pradesh and held that position until his elevation to the bench of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. He was appointed as a puisne judge of the Allahabad High Court on November 21, 2011, and took the oath as a permanent judge on August 6, 2013. He became the Senior Judge of the Lucknow Bench on March 28, 2023.

On July 29, 2023, Justice Upadhyaya was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court and took the oath of office.
