Senior Advocate Satya Darshi Sanjay has been appointed as the new Advocate General of Bihar, replacing Prashant Kumar Shahi. The Bihar Law Department issued notification confirming his appointment by the Governor under Article 165(1) of the Constitution, effective after he assumes charge.

Senior Advocate Satya Darshi Sanjay has been appointed as the new Advocate General of Bihar, succeeding Senior Advocate Prashant Kumar Shahi, who recently stepped down from the position.

The Bihar government’s Law Department issued an official notification stating that Governor has appointed Satya Darshi Sanjay as the Advocate General under Article 165(1) of the Constitution of India. The appointment will come into effect from the date Sanjay formally takes charge of the office.

Satya Darshi Sanjay is currently serving as an Additional Solicitor General of India and regularly appears before the Supreme Court of India. He has also represented the Union government in several matters before the Patna High Court and other constitutional courts.

Sanjay has been closely involved in legal proceedings concerning Bihar for several years. He was first appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India for the Patna High Court in 2015. In 2018, he was reappointed for another term, becoming the first person from Bihar to hold the position of Additional Solicitor General for the State.

In September 2024, Sanjay was appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India for the Supreme Court for a three-year tenure. During his legal career, he has handled several significant matters involving the Union government and has appeared in important constitutional and public law cases.

As per his professional profile, Sanjay completed his legal education from the Campus Law Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He has practised extensively before both the Patna High Court and the Supreme Court of India and is known for his experience in constitutional, administrative, and government litigation.

The post of Bihar Advocate General became vacant after Senior Advocate Prashant Kumar Shahi resigned earlier this week following a change in the political leadership of the State.

Shahi had been appointed as Advocate General in 2023 during the tenure of the government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. After the recent change in the State administration and the swearing-in of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Samrat Chaudhary as Chief Minister, Shahi resigned from the post, paving the way for the new government to appoint its preferred legal advisor.

The Advocate General is the highest law officer of a State and performs a key constitutional role by advising the State government on legal matters and representing it in courts. Under Article 165 of the Constitution, the Governor appoints the Advocate General, who holds office during the Governor’s pleasure.
