Anil Ambani filed a Rs 2 crore defamation suit before the Delhi High Court against Times of India, Economic Times and Press Trust of India over allegedly sensationalised reports concerning ongoing CBI and ED investigations.

Businessman Anil Ambani has filed a Rs 2 crore defamation suit before the Delhi High Court against Times of India, Economic Times and Press Trust of India (PTI), alleging that the media organisations carried sensationalised and defamatory reports concerning ongoing investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The matter was heard by Justice Subramonium Prasad, who issued notice to Bennett Coleman and Company Limited (BCCL), the publisher of Times of India and Economic Times, along with the editors and other concerned parties associated with the reports.

The Court directed the respondents to file their replies and posted the matter for further hearing on August 24.

In his plea, Ambani has alleged that defamatory articles and videos were published in connection with the CBI and ED probes into an alleged loan fraud case involving companies associated with the Reliance Group.

According to the suit, the publications falsely projected him as personally involved in the alleged financial irregularities despite the investigations primarily concerning corporate entities.

The suit claims that the reports relied on “unverified sources, conjecture and speculative assertions” while portraying Ambani as directly linked to the alleged misconduct involving Reliance Communications Limited, Reliance Home Finance Limited and Reliance Commercial Finance Limited.

Ambani has contended that the investigations relate to the companies and not to him in his personal capacity. He has further argued that he was not involved in the day-to-day management and operational affairs of these companies during the period relevant to the alleged irregularities under investigation.

The suit states that the allegedly false, malicious and misleading reporting has caused significant damage to his reputation, credibility and goodwill. According to the plaint, legal notices dated November 28, 2025 and December 5, 2025 were issued to the concerned media organisations demanding removal of the allegedly defamatory material and publication of unconditional apologies.

However, Ambani claims that the notices were ignored, compelling him to approach the Delhi High Court seeking damages and other reliefs.

During the hearing, advocate Tanmaya Mehta, appearing for Ambani, urged the Court to restrain media houses from publishing oral observations made during court proceedings when such remarks do not form part of the final written judicial order.

Mehta submitted before the Court,

“At least some direction to the effect that oral observations of court that are not in written order should not be cited. They are quoting oral observations. The law is settled that you cannot quote oral observations,”

The High Court, however, refused to grant any interim restraint order against the media organisations.

Justice Prasad observed,

“Same order. Simple, not a single stay,”

Notably, Ambani has also initiated separate legal proceedings against NDTV and IANS over their reporting relating to the same investigations. Both NDTV and IANS are owned by the Adani Group.

As part of those proceedings, Ambani has alleged before the High Court that the Adani Group intends to take over his companies and that NDTV allegedly published 72 pointed articles against him over the past few months to facilitate its owners’ “predatory strategies.

The legal battle comes amid ongoing scrutiny and investigations into financial transactions and alleged loan irregularities involving companies linked to the Reliance Group.
