Tempers flared in the Delhi High Court as senior lawyers Mahesh Jethmalani and Rajiv Nayar clashed during arguments in the Sunjay Kapur estate case. Karisma Kapoor’s children seek a share in their late father’s Rs 30,000 crore assets, while widow Priya Kapur claims his entire estate through a will.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Friday turned tense when two senior lawyers clashed during arguments in the high-profile inheritance case concerning the estate of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur, valued at nearly Rs 30,000 crore.

A short 21-second video clip from the courtroom shows senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani and senior lawyer Rajiv Nayar in a heated verbal exchange after Mr Jethmalani interrupted Mr Nayar while he was presenting his arguments.

In the clip, the sharp words exchanged between the two lawyers were as follows:

Advocate Jethmalani:

“Just because…”

Advocate Nayar:

“Please don’t interrupt me. I am not used to interruptions.”

Advocate Jethmalani:

“You should get a taste of your own medicine then. And don’t shout at me. Please don’t shout at me.”

Advocate Nayar:

“You interrupted me.”

Advocate Jethmalani:

“Do not shout at me. Have some courtesy to the council. If you shout, you will get paid back in coin.”

Advocate Nayar:

“You’re not used to…”

Advocate Jethmalani:

“Am not a pushover.”

This courtroom drama unfolded during the battle over Sunjay Kapur’s assets. Mr Jethmalani is appearing for Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, who are seeking one-fifth share each of their late father’s property.

On the other side, Mr Nayar represents Sunjay’s wife, Priya Kapur, who claims that Sunjay had left a will handing over his entire personal estate to her.

According to the petition filed by Karisma Kapoor’s daughter, Samaira Kapur, through her mother (as her general power of attorney holder), and on behalf of her minor brother Kiaan, the will allegedly dated March 21 is being challenged.

The children argue that their father never spoke of such a will, and neither Priya nor any other person had ever mentioned it during his lifetime. Sunjay Kapur had suddenly collapsed while playing polo in England on June 12 this year.

The children are demanding equal inheritance rights, asking for one-fifth share each in his estate.

Priya Kapur, however, has strongly opposed the case, claiming that the petition itself is not valid. Arguing before the court, Mr Rajiv Nayar said:

“This suit is not maintainable at all. I am his legal wife. The claims of love and affection – where was all this when they fought prolonged divorce legal battles in the Supreme Court. Your husband left you several years ago.”

He was referring to Karisma Kapoor and Sunjay Kapur’s divorce in 2016.

Priya further claimed that Karisma’s children had already received Rs 1,900 crore worth of assets through the RK Family Trust, suggesting that their claims to the estate were unfair.

In another twist, Sunjay Kapur’s mother came forward before the court, stating that she had lost all her properties worth over Rs 10,000 crore and was now “left without a roof.”

Considering the sensitive nature of the dispute, the Delhi High Court has directed Priya Kapur to disclose a complete list of all movable and immovable assets owned by Sunjay Kapur as of June 12, the date of his death.

This inheritance battle has now become one of the most closely watched legal disputes, involving high stakes, family divisions, and questions about the authenticity of the will.
