Sengar, sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor and 10 years for the custodial death of the victim’s father, sought bail in both cases, which were heard by different Benches.

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court today (23rd Dec) has extended by four weeks the interim bail granted to expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, convicted in the 2017 Unnao rape case.
Sengar, sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a minor and 10 years for the custodial death of the victim’s father, sought bail in both cases, which were heard by different Benches.
Earlier, the High Court suspended his life imprisonment on medical grounds until December 20. Sengar then sought a five-month extension of bail, citing health issues post-eye surgery and treatment for hemorrhoids.
The Division Bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh and Justice Amit Sharma allowed a four-week extension, permitting him to visit AIIMS for follow-up medical consultation from January 10–15, 2025, and directed him to surrender on January 20.
Conditions were imposed on Sengar, restricting him from leaving Delhi or changing his residence without Court approval. He was allowed one attendant, limited to two visitors at a time, and mandated to remain under 24×7 police surveillance. A CBI officer was tasked with daily contact.
The survivor was kidnapped and raped by Sengar in June 2017, sold for Rs 60,000, and later threatened by police under Sengar’s influence. In 2019, the Supreme Court transferred all related cases to Delhi for expedited trial, leading to Sengar’s conviction in December 2019.
Despite his bail plea being opposed by the survivor’s lawyer and the CBI, the Court considered his medical condition. AIIMS’ sealed report indicated that Sengar’s condition was stable and manageable as an outpatient, though the hospital requested tighter security due to numerous visitors.
Meanwhile, Delhi High Court on 3rd Dec directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to respond to a plea from expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is seeking suspension of his 10-year prison sentence on medical grounds.
The court, presided over by Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri, also instructed jail authorities to submit a report on Sengar’s medical condition.
Senger was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2022 for the rape of a minor in 2017. In 2022, a division bench of Justice Mukta Gupta and Justice Poonam A. Bamba had granted him two months of interim bail to attend his daughter’s wedding.
The High Court will next hear the matter on January 27, 2025. Separately, in the custodial death case, Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri extended Sengar’s bail until December 23, pending the Division Bench order.
