The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) has accused the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of overstepping its authority during raids, claiming procedural violations of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act and infringement on employee privacy. TASMAC argues the ED’s actions were illegal and lacked transparency regarding the reasons for their search and data seizure.
Senior Advocate Harish Salve has once again criticized the Supreme Court’s Collegium system, calling himself a “trenchant critic” of it. He said that the system is “not equipped” to handle cases like the one involving Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma. The controversy revolves around reports that large amounts of cash were recovered from Justice Varma’s house. Mr. Salve has now called for the judge’s transfer to the Allahabad High Court to be put on hold until more clarity emerges.
Delhi High Court today (23rd Dec) has extended expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s interim bail for four weeks, allowing medical consultations at AIIMS following his life sentence for rape and 10-year term for custodial death. Despite opposition from the survivor’s lawyer, health concerns influenced the decision. Next hearing scheduled for January 27, 2025.
Delhi Court today sentenced activist Medha Patkar to five months in jail in a defamation case by LG VK Saxena, suspended for 30 days considering her age and health. She was also fined Rs 10 lakh. The case dates back to 2000 when Saxena criticized her Narmada Bachao Andolan. Patkar accused Saxena of unethical financial dealings.
