The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has taken up a criminal petition filed against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, alleging that he possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The petition requests that the case be investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The court has accepted the application and is expected to hear the matter shortly. The petitioner has argued that the CBI should register a regular case and carry out a thorough investigation into the allegations.
The case was placed on the fresh list on May 6 before a division bench of Justices Rajesh Singh Chauhan and Jafir Ahmad. Before the hearing, petitioner S Vignesh Shishir sought that the matter be treated as urgent and heard in chambers. The court agreed to the request and allowed a chamber hearing later that day.

In the petition, it has been alleged that Rahul Gandhi and members of his family hold assets that exceed their known sources of income, and that an impartial probe is required. Along with the CBI, the petition has also named the Enforcement Directorate, the Income Tax Department, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Serious Fraud Investigation Office as respondents.
Claims about the Gandhi family’s income have been discussed in political circles for some time. If the court orders a CBI investigation, it may result in additional legal scrutiny and could require the Congress leader to provide documentation supporting the income he has declared.
