The Trinamool Congress moved the Calcutta High Court challenging Assembly Speaker Rathindra Bose’s decision recognising rebel MLA Ritabrata Banerjee as Leader of the Opposition instead of Sovandeb Chattopadhyay. The Court has scheduled the matter for hearing on June 11 amid escalating political tensions.
The Madras High Court stressed that election petitions must be decided within a reasonable time, warning that prolonged delays undermine electoral accountability and democratic principles. Criticising the six-year pendency of the Radhapuram election appeal, the Court described the situation as a “grave mockery of justice.”

Today (13th May): The Supreme Court rejected a plea to remove Arvind Kejriwal as the Chief Minister of Delhi, stating that it is the Lieutenant Governor’s responsibility to address the issue. Both the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court declined to intervene in the matter, emphasizing the non-interference principle and expressing reluctance to be involved in a political dispute.
The Bengaluru Court re-issued summons to Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar in BJP’s defamation case related to an advertisement termed ‘Corruption Rate Card’. Rahul Gandhi was exempted until June 1st. The case stems from BJP’s complaint regarding pre-2023 state election allegations. The court ordered them to appear on April 29th after acknowledging a prima facie case.
