A litigant appearing in person was forcibly removed from the Supreme Court after allegedly abusing the Bench and throwing case papers during a hearing challenging an Allahabad High Court order. The incident before Justices K.V. Viswanathan and Alok Aradhe briefly disrupted court proceedings.
The Allahabad High Court referred a contempt matter to the Chief Justice after a lawyer shouted in court, accusing the judge. Justice Santosh Rai termed the conduct scandalous, dignity and directed the Registry to seek orders for contempt proceedings.
Ex-CJI BR Gavai said he continued court proceedings on instinct and chose not to seek action against the lawyer who attempted to hurl a shoe at him inside the Supreme Court. He stressed that calmness and respect for judicial decorum guided his decision despite the act being termed contempt.
