Kolkata: The parents of a Kolkata doctor who was raped and murdered last month have accused the Kolkata Police of attempting to destroy evidence from the start of the investigation.

During a large protest in Kolkata today, the victim’s mother expressed frustration, stating,

“The government, administration, and police have not supported us from the outset.” She further alleged that the police tried to tamper with evidence early on and urged the protests to continue until justice is served.

The victim’s father shared that the ongoing protests have given him hope for justice.

“I ask everyone to stand by us. I understand justice won’t come easily, but we must fight for it. The people supporting us are our main source of strength,”

he said.

The parents of the woman participated in a march organized by the medical community, which moved from Sealdah to Esplanade.

Junior doctors have frequently visited the parents, offering them emotional support and keeping them informed about their ongoing movement for justice.

On September 4, the woman’s father accused the police of intentionally delaying the filing of a First Information Report. He also alleged that a police officer had attempted to bribe him and persuade the family to settle the case.

Additionally, he accused another Kolkata Police officer of deliberately misleading the public with false statements to the media, even though the case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Previously, the parents also claimed that they wanted to preserve their daughter’s body for a second postmortem but were pressured into cremating her.

“About 300-400 police officers surrounded us. When we returned home, we saw around 300 officers stationed outside. They created such pressure that we had no choice but to cremate her,”

the woman’s father said, sparking a major political controversy. The Trinamool Congress urged political parties to respect the family’s grief.

“There should be no politics here. Political parties should leave them in peace,”

said state minister Shashi Panja.

Regarding RG Kar’s Ex-principal Sandip Ghosh’s arrest, the victim’s mother remarked:

“He (Ghosh) has been arrested on corruption charges, which are unrelated to our daughter’s death. We want to see the CBI make progress in our daughter’s case.” The victim’s father added: “Our daughter was a victim of this corruption racket. But we need to see genuine progress in understanding why and how she was killed.”

When asked about the Aparajita Bill, the victim’s father said: “We don’t have much to say about it. We just want workplaces to be safer so that such incidents never happen again.”

The Supreme Court is set to hear the case today, which it took up on its own. The CBI is expected to submit its report during the hearing. The Calcutta High Court, responding to the parents’ plea had already transferred the investigation to the CBI.

While the protests surrounding the rape-murder have gained momentum, the woman’s parents remain deeply involved and appear on significant occasions.

Her mother, grieving the loss of her only daughter, remarked today,

“All these protesters are now my children.”
