NEW DELHI: Today (29th July): The Supreme Court scheduled the hearing on August 5 filed by former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, seeking bail in the liquor policy case. The former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Manish Sisodia, who has been in jail for 16 months.

Sisodia has sought bail in the ED and CBI case related to the alleged liquor scam, arguing that there has been no progress in the case since October last year. On July 16, the court agreed to hear Sisodia’s petitions and requested responses from the CBI and ED.
A bench comprising Justices BR Gavai and KV Viswanathan presided over the hearing.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented Sisodia before the bench.
The Additional Solicitor General, representing the central agencies, stated that while his reply was ready, he objected on the grounds that this was the second Special Leave Petition (SLP) on the same decision, which is not permissible.

Sisodia, who once oversaw 18 departments in the Delhi Government, was arrested by the CBI on February 26, 2023, and by the ED on March 9, 2023. He has been in Tihar Jail since then. Sisodia had previously approached the Supreme Court for bail, citing his wife’s illness, but was only granted permission to meet her, not bail.

The alleged liquor scam involves claims by the CBI and ED that corruption occurred in the liquor policy for the financial year 2021-22. The agencies allege that changes to the policy benefited liquor businesses in exchange for bribes. At the time, Manish Sisodia was the Excise Minister. The Aam Aadmi Party and its national convener Arvind Kejriwal have also been implicated in the case.
