NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court of India today gave strong comments while hearing a legal request from a village Mukhiya (head) from Bihar who had asked for anticipatory bail.
This means he wanted protection from arrest before the police could take him into custody in a criminal case.
The matter came up in front of Justice Surya Kant, a judge of the Supreme Court. During the hearing, the judge asked for more details about the criminal background of the person.
Justice Surya Kant asked the Mukhiya’s lawyer:
“Where are the details of the other cases against you?”
To this, the lawyer replied honestly and said:
“Yes there are other cases against me. I have been roped in because of village politics.”
This statement showed that the Mukhiya believed he was falsely involved in those cases due to local political rivalry in the village.
Hearing this, Justice Surya Kant made a strong remark which has now caught public attention.
He said:
“Of course, a village Mukhiya in Bihar is bound to have criminal cases registered against him. If you don’t have criminal cases you are not eligible to be a Mukhiya in Bihar.”
These comments from the Supreme Court show the serious condition of local-level politics in Bihar, where it seems like being involved in criminal cases is almost seen as a normal or even expected part of being a village head.
The judge made this remark in a somewhat sarcastic tone, pointing out the unfortunate reality of how criminal backgrounds are often seen among local politicians.
The Supreme Court has not yet given a final decision on the bail application but the hearing highlighted how deeply politics and criminal allegations are connected at the grassroot level in some parts of the country, especially in Bihar.
These observations by the Supreme Court are now being discussed widely and raise questions about the need for cleaner politics, especially in rural India where local leaders like Mukhiyas play an important role in development and governance.
