Justice Bela M Trivedi, the eleventh woman judge of the Supreme Court, retires after 3.5 years of impactful service. Her rare journey from trial court to apex court marks a milestone in India’s judicial history.

New Delhi: Today, On May 16, Justice Bela M Trivedi, who was the eleventh woman judge in the history of the Supreme Court of India, retired from her post on Friday.

She spent three-and-a-half years serving in the highest court of the country.

The Supreme Court of India, which is now 75 years old, has seen only a few women rise to its bench, and Justice Trivedi’s presence marked a significant step in that journey.

Justice Bela M Trivedi began her career in law as a trial court judge in Gujarat in July 1995. Her journey is quite rare and inspiring because she moved up through the judicial system from the lower courts to the highest court in India.

Very few judges have taken this route to reach the Supreme Court. During her time in the top court, she played an important role in many landmark judgments, contributing greatly to Indian constitutional and legal development.

An interesting part of Justice Trivedi’s life is that when she was appointed as a judge in the trial court, her father was already working as a judge in the same court.

This father-daughter moment became a special record. In fact, it was officially recognised in the 1996 edition of the Limca Book of Indian Records, which noted:

“Father – daughter judges in the same court”.

The Supreme Court website also highlights this rare and proud moment under her profile.

It says:

“It was a happy coincidence that her father was already working as the judge, city civil and sessions court when she was appointed. The Limca Book of Indian records has recorded the entry in their 1996 edition that ‘Father – daughter judges in the same court'”.

Justice Trivedi’s legal career has been full of achievements.

Her contribution not only as a woman in the judiciary but also as a judge who rose through the ranks has inspired many young lawyers and judges across the country.

Her retirement is seen as the end of a significant chapter in the Indian legal system.

Now that Justice Trivedi has stepped down, her legacy will continue to motivate future generations in the Indian judiciary.

She is remembered for her dedication, hard work, and the pride she brought to her family and the nation through her service.
