Gujarat Mob Lynching | "He Was Held So He Couldn't Escape": Supreme Court Denies Bail in Death of Salman Vohra During Cricket Match

NEW DELHI: In the Salman Vohra mob lynching case from Gujarat, the Supreme Court of India on July 14 rejected the bail request of a man accused of being involved in the brutal mob attack that led to the death of 23-year-old Salman Vohra.

The incident took place during a local cricket match in Chikhodara village, located in the Anand district of Gujarat.

A Bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta dismissed the bail plea, noting that the accused was in a similar position as another co-accused person whose bail plea had already been denied.

The court did not find any new or convincing reason to grant bail in this case. The Bench clearly stated that they were “not inclined to entertain the petition”.

The tragic incident happened in June 2024, when Salman Vohra, a young Muslim man, had travelled with his friends to watch a local cricket match in Chikhodara village. During the match, some of Vohra’s friends reportedly got into an argument with some local people. When the situation started getting worse, Vohra tried to calm everyone down.

But unfortunately, instead of easing the tension, he himself became a victim. He was allegedly grabbed and held back, and then brutally attacked with sticks, cricket bats, and even knives. Sadly, Salman Vohra could not survive the injuries and passed away soon after the attack.

A horrifying video of the attack was widely shared on social media, showing some bystanders even cheering and shouting while Vohra was being beaten. This video led to huge public outrage across India. Politicians, civil rights groups, and the general public expressed their anger.

Member of Parliament Asaduddin Owaisi reacted strongly and described the attack as “mob lynching”.

After the incident, the Gujarat Police conducted an investigation and filed a case under several serious sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

These include:

Earlier, the accused man had approached the Gujarat High Court seeking regular bail. However, the High Court denied bail after observing that the accused had allegedly held Salman Vohra by the neck to prevent him from running away, while others attacked him fatally.

The Court noted this act showed common intention and shared purpose among the attackers.

Unhappy with the High Court’s decision, the accused filed a petition in the Supreme Court. However, the top court found “no ground to interfere with the High Court’s order” and hence, the petition was dismissed.
