A team of sitting Supreme Court and High Court judges, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, will compete against the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record (SCAORA) XI.

NEW DELHI: This Sunday, Delhi will witness an exciting cricket match between judges and lawyers. But this time, the battle is not in the courtroom—it is on the cricket field.
A team of sitting Supreme Court and High Court judges, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, will compete against the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record (SCAORA) XI.
The SCAORA XI team consists of Senior Advocates and Advocates-on-Record (AoRs). Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has been named the non-playing captain of the SCAORA XI, while SCAORA President Vipin Nair will serve as the playing captain.
This special match will mark the opening of the first-ever SCAORA 20-over white-ball Cricket League. The event is set to take place on Sunday at 4:30 PM. A day before the match, the judges held a practice session to prepare for the game.
The inaugural edition of the league will feature eight teams, all owned by designated Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court. These teams will compete against each other in a thrilling cricket tournament.
The eight teams are led by:
- Senior Advocate Dama Seshadri Naidu
- Senior Advocate PB Suresh
- Senior Advocate Sajan Poovayya
- Senior Advocate Devadatt Kamat
- Senior Advocate Buddy Ranganathan
- Senior Advocate Sitesh Mukherjee
- Senior Advocate Vikas Pahwa
- Senior Advocate Chinmoy Sharma
All the teams will have players who are exclusively Advocates-on-Record. The matches are planned to be played under floodlights, making it a day-night event. A white ball will be used for the games, giving the tournament a professional touch.
The inaugural match will be telecast live with special permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA). This rare permission ensures that the legal community and cricket enthusiasts can enjoy the match from their homes.
SCAORA President Vipin Nair emphasized how such events bring a refreshing change to the lives of both judges and lawyers.
He stated in a press release “Sporting events like the Cricket League promise to be a welcome break to both the judges and the AoRs from their usual serious work schedules and is a continuation of innovative events being introduced by the current SCAORA Executive Committee like holding an International Legal Conclave recently at Goa.”
This cricket initiative has been conceptualized by a core team comprising:
- Vipin Nair (President, SCAORA)
- Amit Sharma (Vice-President, SCAORA)
- Nikhil Jain (Secretary, SCAORA)
- Kaustabh Shukla (Assistant Secretary, SCAORA)
