New Delhi: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice Sanjiv Khanna played cricket at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi. He showed his batting skills and impressed everyone with his performance.

The friendly match featured CJI XI against SCAORA XI, and a video capturing his batting showcases some notable shots. Lasting two minutes and 18 seconds, the footage is sure to entertain viewers.

During the match, Justice Sanjiv Khanna showed great cricket skills.

On the first ball, he played a shot towards mid-off but didn’t score any runs. The second ball struck his bat and went behind the wickets.

However, he hit a four on the third ball towards the leg side, and on the fourth, he pushed it to the leg side and ran for a single.

A team of sitting Supreme Court and High Court judges, led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, competed against the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record (SCAORA) XI.

The SCAORA XI team consists of Senior Advocates and Advocates-on-Record (AoRs). Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was named the non-playing captain of the SCAORA XI, while SCAORA President Vipin Nair will serve as the playing captain.

The event took place on Sunday at 4:30 PM. A day before the match, the judges held a practice session to prepare for the game.

The inaugural edition of the league featured eight teams, all owned by designated Senior Advocates of the Supreme Court. These teams competed against each other in a thrilling cricket tournament.

Wearing blue and orange jerseys, the judges delivered an entertaining performance, showcasing their skills with cover drives, pull shots, and straight drives. The bowling lineup, which included Justices Manoj Misra, Vikram Nath, and PS Narasimha, made it challenging for the lawyers to chase down runs.

CJI Sanjiv Khanna, awarded the title of “Best Fighter of the Game,” described the experience as “a dream come true,” stating,

“Every Delhiite dreams of playing here, and today we got to live that dream. It’s not about the result but about the joy of the game.”

Justice Sundresh was named Man of the Match for his outstanding contributions, while other top honors for Best Batsman, Best Bowler, and Best Fielder also went to players from the CJI XI.

This marked the first day-night match featuring judges and served as the inaugural game of SCAORA’s new cricket league, organized by President Vipin Nair, Vice President Amit Sharma, Secretary Nikhil Jain, and Treasurer Aljo Joseph.

Over the coming months, eight teams of lawyers sponsored by senior advocates Dama Seshadri Naidu, PB Suresh, Sajan Poovayya, Devadutt Kamat, Buddy Ranganathan, Sitesh Mukherjee, Vikas Pahwa, and Chinmoy Sharma will compete in a series of T20 matches. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta played a pivotal role in securing the ground, while DDCA President Rohan Jaitley ensured professional facilities, including umpires and commentators, adding to the tournament’s official feel.

At the end of the night, there were no winning arguments or final verdicts just a wonderful display of cricketing camaraderie between the judiciary and the bar. While ties are uncommon in the legal realm, this one on the cricket field was celebrated as a victory for the spirit of the game.

All the teams had players who were exclusively Advocates-on-Record. The matches planned to be played under floodlights, making it a day-night event. A white ball was used for the games, giving the tournament a professional touch.

The inaugural match telecasted live with special permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA). This rare permission ensured that the legal community and cricket enthusiasts could enjoy the match from their homes.
