New Delhi: Today, On May 29, The Supreme Court of India has recently made an important decision in a case involving serious allegations of rape and the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The top court quashed an FIR that was filed against a man who had been accused of raping a woman by allegedly making false promises of marriage.

The Court also took note that the same FIR included charges under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

However, after a careful review, the judges concluded that there was no proper evidence or material available on record to support the woman’s allegations.

In its detailed ruling, the Supreme Court strongly criticized the FIR, making it clear that it found the entire complaint to be false and misleading.

The Court observed,

“The FIR was nothing but a bundle of lies” and further described the complaint as “full of fabricated and malicious unsubstantiated allegations levelled by the complainant.”

This strong language from the bench reflects the seriousness with which the judiciary viewed the misuse of legal provisions in this case.

The bench also pointed out that false complaints, especially those involving serious charges like rape or provisions under the SC/ST Act, not only damage the reputation of the accused but also waste the valuable time of the courts.

Such cases may even weaken the trust in genuine complaints filed under these laws.

When the court carefully examined the facts, it found that the woman’s allegations had no support in terms of evidence or witness statements, making it clear that the FIR had been filed with dishonest intentions.

By quashing the FIR, the Supreme Court has once again underlined the importance of truth and evidence in criminal justice.

It has also sent a clear message that the judiciary will not tolerate the misuse of laws that are meant to protect the rights and dignity of individuals, especially in sensitive cases like sexual assault or those concerning marginalised communities.
