Shocking assault took place inside guard room of South Kolkata law college; all accused are current or former students. Court grants four-day police custody as investigation continues.

Kolkata: Today, on June 27, three people have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a law student inside a college campus in South Kolkata. The shocking incident happened on June 25, 2025, between 7:30 PM and 10:50 PM, according to a senior officer from the Kolkata Police, who shared this information on June 27, 2025 (Friday).
All the three accused were taken to court, which sent them to police custody for four days. The police also informed that the victim is in the process of giving a confidential statement before a judicial magistrate. Meanwhile, the police have launched a full investigation into the case.
The alleged sexual assault reportedly took place inside a guard’s room on the ground floor of the college building. This room is located next to the student union office. Police said the horrific crime and the torture lasted for more than two hours.
As per police reports, the accused have been identified as 30-year-old Manojit Mishra, 20-year-old Pramit Mukherjee, and 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed. Out of the three, one is a former student of the college, while the other two are still studying there.
A medical examination of the survivor was completed at Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.
A police officer said,
“The witnesses were examined and their statement were recorded. The P.O (place of occurrence) was visited and it was guarded for pending forensic investigation.”
Following a complaint filed by the survivor, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at the Kasba Police Station. The FIR includes the names of all three accused.
The accused were expected to be produced at the Alipore Court on June 27, 2025, where the police planned to request their custody to carry forward the investigation.
This incident has once again raised major concerns about women’s safety in public and educational institutions in Kolkata. It comes nearly ten months after a similar tragic case in which a postgraduate medical trainee was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024.
The back-to-back incidents of such serious crimes within educational campuses underline the urgent need for strict action, better surveillance, and safety measures for women.
The shocking nature of this recent crime, that too within a college campus, has left the city deeply disturbed and outraged.
Background Of The Case
The alleged gang rape of the 24-year-old student at South Calcutta Law College adds to a troubling pattern of crimes against women in West Bengal, particularly within educational institutions. This is not an isolated incident.
Nearly ten months ago, in August 2024, the city witnessed another horrific crime when a postgraduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
That incident had already raised grave concerns about the safety of women within campuses and public institutions in Kolkata.
Despite public outcry and demands for systemic reforms, incidents like these continue to occur, indicating glaring lapses in security, enforcement, and accountability.
Student groups, civil society, and opposition leaders have frequently criticized the West Bengal administration for failing to create a safe environment for young women.
This latest incident, involving current and former students allegedly linked with political student bodies, also highlights the dangers of unchecked influence and lack of oversight within campus premises.
