The court was told the inhaler was not given out of concern but so the survivor could recover and be raped again. All accused are in custody.

Kolkata: Today, on July 01, In a shocking revelation, the public prosecutor in a Kolkata court said that the 24-year-old rape survivor from South Calcutta Law College was not given an inhaler during her panic attack out of care, but so that she could recover just enough to be brutalised again.
The disturbing statement came during a court hearing seeking police custody of the accused.
The survivor, a law student, was allegedly raped on June 25 at the South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata’s Kasba area by 31-year-old Monojit Mishra, a former student of the same college.
Along with Mishra, three others — two current students, 19-year-old Zaib Ahmed and 20-year-old Pramit Mukhopadhyay, and a security guard — have also been arrested in connection with the case.
According to her complaint, the survivor had a panic attack before the incident. Mishra reportedly asked one of the accused to get her an inhaler.
After she used it and started feeling better, she attempted to run away. But the accused allegedly dragged her into the college’s security room where Mishra raped her, while the two students recorded the act.

During the hearing, the public prosecutor informed the court that initial medical and electronic evidence supports the survivor’s allegations.
He stated,
“First, the survivor was brutally assaulted. When her health deteriorated, she was given an inhaler. The inhaler was not given so that she could recover, but so that she could be brutalised again as soon as she recovered.”
He further urged the court to grant a 10-day police custody of the accused for a more thorough investigation, adding that several aspects of the case are still under probe.
The defence lawyer, who appeared for Monojit Mishra and the two students, argued that his clients are fully cooperating with the police.
He questioned whether the survivor’s phone had been seized and if her call detail records had been examined. The lawyer also claimed that the case is a “conspiracy” against his clients.
After hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted police custody of Mishra and the two students till July 8. The security guard has been sent to police custody till Friday.
Amid growing outrage, questions are also being raised about Mishra’s past. After photos surfaced showing him with senior leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), including MP Abhishek Banerjee and Health Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, the party admitted that Mishra had been associated with its student wing.
However, it clarified that this connection would not protect him from punishment.
The party stated,
“This would not come in the way of him getting the strictest possible punishment,”
Adding to the gravity of the case, a former student of the South Calcutta Law College told NDTV that Mishra had a history of violent and abusive behaviour.

According to the former student,
“In 2019, he sexually harassed a woman in college and tore her clothes. In 2024, he beat up a security guard and vandalised college property. He was also involved in some kind of theft. There have been several complaints against him, but nobody took any action because of his political influence.”
She further added,
“I don’t think there is any girl in college who wasn’t harassed by him. There were many complaints. Even his parents disowned him.”
Background of the Case
On June 25, 2025, a horrifying incident came to light from the South Calcutta Law College, where a 24-year-old first-year female law student was allegedly gang raped inside the guard’s room on the college campus.
According to the student’s complaint, she was lured and later forcibly taken to the guard’s room, where she was sexually assaulted by two senior students and an alumnus of the college.
The prime accused have been identified as Manojit Mishra, Promit Mukherjee, and Zaid Ahmed. The crime reportedly occurred between 3:30 PM and 10:50 PM, during which time the victim was confined and assaulted.
The college security guard, whose presence at the time was captured on CCTV footage, was also arrested for alleged complicity or negligence.
The motive behind the crime, as suspected by the police, might have been revenge, as the victim had allegedly rejected a marriage proposal from the main accused, Manojit Mishra.
The case gained massive attention after the victim filed a written complaint with the Kolkata Police, leading to the arrest of the three main accused.
The police also retrieved seven hours of CCTV footage from the college premises, which reportedly confirms the sequence of events described in the victim’s statement.
The incident triggered widespread protests and political outrage. Kolkata Police formed a five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by an Assistant Commissioner to probe the case.
The SIT is tasked with determining whether the crime was pre-planned and whether others were involved.
Meanwhile, political tension escalated, with BJP leaders, including Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, attempting a protest march that was stopped by police.
The BJP demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, alleging that the accused had links with the Trinamool Congress (TMC).
