Kolkata Law College Gang-Rape | "Raped On Camera. Sure She Won't Go To Cops": Monojit 'Mango' Mishra’s Shocking Confession

WEST BENGAL: Monojit Mishra—known as ‘Mango‘ on campus—who is the main accused in the recent law college rape case, confessed to police that he thought the survivor would stay silent out of fear. He said he believed that “the threat to circulate the sex assault video” would scare the 24-year-old woman and stop her from going to the police.

This terrible crime took place on the evening of June 25 inside the college premises. According to the survivor’s police complaint, after the horrifying incident, she immediately called her father to come and pick her up. After that, Monojit and the two other accused—Pramit Mukhopadhyay and Zaib Ahmed—quickly left the campus.

Sources from Kolkata Police said that Monojit even asked some of his friends to watch the Kasba Police Station, which is only about a kilometre from the college. He wanted to see if the survivor would go there to file a complaint.

The very next day, Monojit called a staff member of the college to find out if any police had come to the campus. When he realised that the police were indeed after him, he panicked and called several of his friends from the legal field and some senior students for help.

However, none of them stepped in to support him.

Later, on the evening of June 26, Monojit and Zaib were seen near Fern Road, close to Ballygunge Railway Station, around 1.5 km from the college. The police tracked them there and arrested both that evening. Pramit was arrested from his home the same night.

During the investigation, Monojit reportedly told police that his two friends, Pramit and Zaib, had recorded videos while he raped the survivor. He said they believed she would not file any complaint because she would be afraid that the videos might be leaked.

The probe has also found that Monojit had been targeting the survivor since the day she joined the law college. Though he was just a contractual employee, Monojit was an ex-student and former head of the Trinamool Congress youth wing in the college. Because of his political ties, he had a strong influence on the campus. His nickname among his close group was ‘Mango’.

Zaib and Pramit told the police that the survivor had earlier rejected Monojit’s proposals. This made him angry, and he wanted to “teach her a lesson”. As part of his plan, he even offered her the position of college union general secretary—a “final bait” to lure her. This offer was suspicious because the college hasn’t had an active student body in many years.

A police source, while speaking to The Times of India, said:

“Zaib and Pramit said that at least two days before the crime, Monojit informed them that the survivor would be on campus to submit an exam form. They were instructed to keep her there until evening.”

Police have found crucial evidence from the crime scene. The rape happened in a room used by the college’s security guard. Important items from that room, including a bedsheet, are now being sent for forensic testing.

Authorities also revealed that Monojit already has 11 previous cases against him. Most of them are about him harassing or misbehaving with women. He was already out on bail when this recent crime took place.

EARLIER IN COURT

In a horrifying and deeply disturbing case, three people have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a female student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25, 2025.

The accused are Monojit Mishra (31), Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), and Zaib Ahmed (19). They were produced in the Court of the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alipore on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

The court sent them to police custody till July 8, 2025.

The incident reportedly took place between 7:30 p.m. and 10:50 p.m. inside the guard room of the college campus, where the girl was allegedly confined and assaulted.

Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against the three under charges related to gang-rape and wrongful confinement. All three were arrested quickly—between Thursday and Friday after the incident.

Pinaki Banerjee, the college guard who was present on duty during the time of the alleged assault, was also arrested by the police on Saturday. He was presented before the court and sent to police custody till July 4, 2025.

During the court proceedings on Tuesday, the public prosecutor told the court that the survivor had fallen sick while being assaulted.

The accused reportedly gave her an inhaler to help her recover before continuing the assault.

The prosecutor prayed for 10 days of police custody to carry out further investigation.

At the same time, the defence lawyer denied the charges. He claimed that a “conspiracy” was being framed against the accused and that there were no videos on the accused’s phones, as alleged by the survivor.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma spoke to the media, saying,

“The case is under investigation. Since the case is very sensitive, we do not want to share details. However, the FIR was prompt. The three accused were arrested within 12 hours and one more person was arrested soon after. We have collected a lot of evidence, which is being analysed. The investigation is underway.”

The Kolkata Police also made an important statement online. They warned the public not to share the survivor’s identity.

“It has come to notice that certain individuals are attempting to disclose the identity of the victim in the Kasba case through the circulation of confidential documents. This is a serious violation of the law… Respecting the dignity and privacy of victims is a legal obligation and a moral imperative,”

-the Kolkata Police said in their official social media post.

In a major development, some lawyers submitted a letter to the Alipore Bar Council and the Alipore Criminal Court Bar Association. They asked for a resolution to stop any lawyer from representing the accused for bail.

Two lawyers from the Bharatiya Janata Party’s legal cell, Chandan Kumar Saha and Subir Sengupta, also held a protest in front of Alipore Court. They questioned whether Monojit Mishra, the main accused, had properly disclosed his background when he was appointed at the law college. They pointed out that he claims to be a practising lawyer.

Mr. Sengupta strongly stated-

“We do not want an alleged rapist to flaunt the fact that he is part of the legal fraternity or for him to seek any sympathies on account of that. The other two accused are law students, and therefore, future lawyers. We boycott all three of them from our fraternity.”
