Today, On 28th March, The CBI informed the Calcutta High Court that the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital was not a case of gang rape. However, the agency is now probing possible cover-up allegations linked to the incident. The case has sparked significant public outcry, demanding a transparent and fair investigation. The court continues to monitor the probe closely.

Kolkata: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Calcutta High Court that its investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital indicated that it was not a case of “gang rape.”
This statement follows a previous directive from a single-judge bench of the Calcutta High Court, which asked the probe agency to clarify whether the woman doctor was a victim of “rape” or “gang rape” and to submit the case diary.

Justice Tirthankar Ghosh emphasized that since one individual, civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, has already been convicted and sentenced for the crime, the agency must ascertain whether others were involved.
On Friday, the Deputy Solicitor General representing the CBI told Justice Ghosh that the agency is currently investigating the involvement of individuals in events that occurred after the commission of the crime, aimed at covering up the incident.
A Senior Counsel for the state noted that while the state did not oppose the investigation into the alleged cover-up, a legal question arises regarding whether the court could reopen a concluded investigation that ended with the trial’s conclusion.
Sanjoy Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the crime.
These developments occurred after the victim’s parents filed a petition seeking further investigation into the case.
Previously, the Supreme Court had directed the parents to approach the Calcutta High Court to address their concerns. The body of the female postgraduate trainee was discovered in a seminar hall at the hospital in the early hours of August 9, 2024, sparking widespread protests across the state.
The victim, an on-duty postgraduate trainee doctor, was found dead in the hospital’s seminar room on August 9. The Calcutta High Court has since ordered a CBI investigation into the case.

The accused, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, arrested and charged with rape and murder. The investigation also expanded to include potential involvement of others, with a focus on hospital staff, given delays and mishandling of initial reports.
Protests by junior doctors escalated as they demanded a thorough and fair investigation, accusing authorities of negligence and suppression of evidence. The case has since been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), following public and legal pressure.
