South Calcutta Law College, shut since June 29 after a student’s alleged gang rape on campus, told the Alipore court it wants to reopen, citing a police email stating no objection to resuming academic activities.

Kolkata: The South Calcutta Law College, which has been closed since June 29 following allegations of a gang rape involving a student on campus, expressed to the Alipore court on Friday its desire to reopen.

A lawyer representing the college mentioned that they received an email from the police indicating no objection to the college’s reopening for academic activities.

The police specified that only the union room and guard room would remain locked, and that certain documents, such as employee attendance registers, must be kept secure.

The lawyer added that the college informed the court that over 200 students are preparing for upcoming semester examinations and need to complete their registration forms. Additionally, staff salaries require disbursement.

The college authorities also requested guidance on ensuring adequate security within the premises.

Following the serious incident where a student was allegedly assaulted by an alumnus and two seniors, the college had opted to suspend all classes indefinitely, as stated in a notification issued on June 29.
