Today, 14th May, In the Sandeshkhali case, a woman surrendered herself to the court. Following her surrender, she has been remanded to judicial custody. The case likely involves legal proceedings regarding her actions or involvement in a specific incident or crime. Further details regarding the case yet to be disclosed.

Barasat (WB): A court in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, On Tuesday, ordered the judicial custody of Piyali Das, a female BJP worker, after she voluntarily surrendered in connection with a criminal case filed against her.

According to the allegations, Das obtained the signature of a woman from Sandeshkhali on a blank sheet of paper, which later filled with complaints of sexual assault against TMC (Trinamool Congress) leaders.

The additional chief judicial magistrate at the Basirhat sub-divisional court rejected Das’s bail request and ordered her to be held in judicial custody for a period of eight days. The woman who lodged the complaint against Das at Sandeshkhali police station claimed that Das coerced her into signing a blank paper, which subsequently used to fabricate allegations of sexual atrocities against her.

The TMC (Trinamool Congress) and its leader, Mamata Banerjee, raised doubts about the authenticity of the “Sandeshkhali movement,” which involved several local women. Their doubts received support when a few sting videos emerged, one of which featured Gangadhar Koyal, a local BJP leader, stating that the movement primarily orchestrated by Suvendu Adhikari, the state BJP chief who joined the party after facing an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on corruption charges.

As a result, numerous complaints surfaced, the most notable being that local women signed blank papers, later filled with allegations of sexual harassment and rape. What initially started as a protest against land grabbing and forced labour by local TMC leaders gradually turned into a demonstration against alleged sexual atrocities committed by TMC leaders against local women. Opposition parties in the state, as well as Governor C.V. Ananda Bose, criticized the police’s inaction and administrative negligence.

Piyali Das, one of the individuals accused of filing these allegedly false complaints of sexual atrocities and issued a notice by the police after a woman filed a written complaint against her. According to the complaint, Das took the woman from her home to meet members of the women’s commission when they visited Sandeshkhali. Das allegedly asked her to sign a paper and then sent her back home.

The woman claims that she did not make any complaint of sexual harassment and that her original complaint was related to non-payment for work she had done. However, her statement reportedly altered.

After receiving the notice from the Sandeshkhali police station, Das remained untraceable for several days before surrendering to the Basirhat court.
