Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court established a special investigation team (SIT) led by two police officers to investigate an alleged gangrape case in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, which occurred last year.
Justice Tirthankar Ghosh noted the delays in the investigation, which was registered at the Sandeshkhali police station on May 16, 2024, and ordered the current investigating officer to transfer the case records to the SIT.

Justice Ghosh appointed Rahul Mishra, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Baduria in the Basirhat police district, and Bireswar Chatterjee, the assistant commissioner of police in the homicide section of Kolkata’s detective department, as members of the SIT.
He instructed the two officers to select a team of inspectors and sub-inspectors to assist in the investigation.
In response to the complainant’s petition regarding the investigation delays, Justice Ghosh directed the SIT to submit a progress report to the additional chief judicial magistrate in Basirhat once a month.
In May 2024, a woman from Sandeshkhali in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district said that she was gang-raped by three men, including Dilip Mondal, the local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader. She tried many times to file a complaint, but the police refused to register it at first.
The case was only registered after local people put pressure on the police.
However, the woman said that the investigation did not move forward for months. She also faced threats from the accused and their supporters. In January 2025, she went to the Calcutta High Court for help, saying that the police were not taking action on purpose.
