Calcutta High Court Demands Progress Report in Sandeshkhali Gang Rape Case

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal Police to file a progress report on January 13 regarding the investigation into a gang rape case from the Sandeshkhali area of North 24 Parganas district.

The incident, which allegedly took place in May last year, was brought to the Court’s attention by the petitioner, who claimed that the accused persons remain at large. Her lawyer further alleged that the accused are “roaming freely and even threatening the petitioner with dire consequences.”

Justice Jay Sengupta, after hearing submissions from both sides, ordered the state to submit a detailed progress report on the ongoing investigation being conducted by the Sandeshkhali Police.

The counsel for the state assured the Court that the investigation is active and nearing its final stages.

Acknowledging the petitioner’s concerns about safety, Justice Sengupta instructed the police to provide two constables for her security at her residence, one of whom must be armed. This security arrangement will remain in place until the next hearing.

The Court emphasized the need for “sharp vigil” in the locale to ensure the petitioner’s safety. The matter has been scheduled for further hearing on January 13, where the progress report will be reviewed.
