A hearing in the defamation case filed against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was postponed to November 26 after an important witness did not come to court.

The matter was listed before the MP-MLA court, but the proceedings could not take place on Monday because the witness, Ram Chandra Dubey, failed to appear.

According to Gandhi’s lawyer, Kashi Prasad Shukla, the witness had sent an application asking for more time, due to which the court adjourned the case.

The judge has now fixed November 26 as the next date of hearing.

This case goes back to August 4, 2018, when BJP leader Vijay Mishra filed a defamation complaint against Rahul Gandhi.

Mishra alleged that during the Karnataka Assembly election campaign, Gandhi had made objectionable remarks about the then BJP national president and now Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Mishra claimed that Gandhi’s comments had damaged the reputation of the party and its senior leadership, and therefore he sought legal action.

For almost five years, Gandhi did not appear before the court in this matter. Due to his repeated absence, the MP-MLA court issued a warrant against him in December 2023.

The case has since continued with several adjournments, and the court is now waiting for the examination of key witnesses before moving forward.

With the witness again missing the hearing on Monday, the matter has been pushed further. The next steps in the case will depend on whether the witnesses appear and whether Gandhi’s legal team presents any additional submissions when the court takes it up on November 26.
