NEW DELHI: A Delhi court on Tuesday (27th Aug) extended Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s judicial custody in connection with a corruption case related to the alleged excise scam until September 3.
Special Judge Kaveri Baweja extended the custody after Kejriwal was presented before the court via video conference following the expiration of his previously granted judicial custody.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday that it possesses evidence showing that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had promised Rs 90 lakhs to each candidate in 40 constituencies during the Goa elections.
The agency further stated that money for this came from the South Group.
“Durgesh Pathak, who was responsible for the Goa election campaign and is a Delhi MLA, oversaw all the finances for the election, and there is evidence that the funds came from the South Group,” the CBI stated, according to reports
These revelations were made during a hearing on the CBI’s arguments regarding a supplementary charge sheet filed against Kejriwal and others in the excise policy case.
Additionally, the CBI filed a request seeking a 14-day extension of Kejriwal’s judicial custody. The agency also mentioned another accused, Vinod Chauhan, who had connections with the PA of K Kavitha, who was granted bail earlier by the Supreme Court in a money laundering investigation by the ED.
During the video conference, Kejriwal noted that his sugar levels were dropping and requested his judicial custody be extended.
The court subsequently extended his custody until September 3 and scheduled the supplementary charge sheet for cognizance on that date.
The court is currently considering arguments on whether to take cognizance of a supplementary charge sheet filed against Kejriwal by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal remains in Delhi’s Tihar jail, facing charges of corruption and money laundering related to the alleged excise policy scam, which is under investigation by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED).
On Friday, the Supreme Court deferred the hearing of Kejriwal’s bail plea in the excise policy case to September 5, following a CBI request for more time to submit its affidavit.
Kejriwal has submitted two petitions: one contesting the denial of bail and the other challenging his arrest by the CBI.
In its detailed affidavit, the CBI claimed that all major decisions regarding the now-cancelled excise policy were made under Kejriwal’s guidance, in coordination with then Deputy CM Manish Sisodia.
On Saturday, AAP accused the BJP and CBI of conspiring to keep Kejriwal behind bars. Sisodia, in a post on X, alleged that the CBI was stalling the court proceedings while leaking details to the media to sway public opinion, asserting that the agency was acting as a “puppet” under BJP’s influence.
In response, the BJP challenged AAP to approach the Supreme Court if they believed the CBI was biased or dishonest.
The CBI has yet to respond to these accusations.
