Judge Kaveri Baweja, who denied bail to AAP leaders including Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia in the Delhi excise policy case, has been appointed as the Delhi High Court Registrar on deputation. She has handled several politically sensitive cases during her tenure.

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court announced the appointment of Kaveri Baweja, who is currently serving as a Special Judge (PC Act) (CBI), as the new Registrar (Vigilance) at the High Court.
In an administrative order issued today, the Court stated,
“Further, Hon’ble the Chief Justice has been pleased to appoint Ms. Kaveri Baweja, an Officer of Delhi Higher Judicial Service, presently posted as Special Judge (PC Act) (CBI), as Registrar (Vigilance) in this Court on deputation basis with immediate effect.”

Baweja will take over from Pawan Kumar Jain, who has been sent back to his original posting and instructed to report to Tis Hazari Courts.
As a Special Judge (PC Act) at Rouse Avenue Courts, Judge Kaveri Baweja has presided over several politically sensitive cases, including those related to the Delhi excise policy, involving former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and other officials from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
She recently denied regular bail to Sisodia and ordered Kejriwal’s remand to ED custody, also refusing him interim bail on medical grounds.
Additionally, she recently sentenced Congress leader Sajjan Kumar to life imprisonment for his involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Earlier this month, Judge Baweja issued a stay on a trial court’s order that directed the Delhi Police to investigate BJP leader and Delhi law minister Kapil Mishra’s alleged role in inciting the 2020 riots in the capital.
Judge Baweja‘s name is frequently mentioned in legal and political discussions and has a background in the trial court and has handled significant cases involving high-profile political figures. A notable case was the Delhi excise policy matter, where former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and other AAP leaders faced allegations of corruption and misconduct regarding liquor license allocations.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) are currently investigating this case, and the court had previously denied bail to the accused during the hearings.
Legal experts note that this appointment as Registrar of the Delhi High Court is a routine administrative move and comes under the purview of deputation procedures.
However, given the political sensitivity of the cases she has handled in the past, the move has sparked discussions about judicial postings and independence.
