A Delhi court exempted Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Durgesh Pathak from personally attending a hearing in the excise policy case due to their election campaigning. The case, now postponed to February 3, 2025, involves corruption allegations in the implementation of the excise policy. The CBI and ED are investigating these charges for possible money laundering.

New Delhi: A Delhi court granted former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Durgesh Pathak exemption from personal appearance in an excise case, as they were occupied with campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja stated,

“In view of the above said submissions, personal appearance of the applicants are exempted for today only through counsel… The case is adjourned to February 3, 2025.”

This money laundering case originates from a CBI investigation prompted by Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, who recommended an inquiry into alleged irregularities in the excise policy’s implementation.

According to the CBI and the ED, irregularities occurred during the modification of the excise policy, allegedly granting undue advantages to license holders. The Delhi government introduced this policy on November 17, 2021, but it was revoked by the end of September 2022 amidst corruption allegations.

The excise policy case revolves around allegations of corruption in the formulation and implementation of Delhi’s liquor policy. The policy was introduced to increase revenue and promote transparency but was later withdrawn amid controversy.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) have accused key leaders, including Manish Sisodia, of manipulating the policy to favor certain liquor businesses in exchange for kickbacks. These funds were allegedly laundered through various channels, prompting an ongoing investigation into money laundering and financial irregularities. The case has become a high-profile matter due to its political implications.

The case has drawn significant political attention, as key leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, are under observation for their alleged involvement.
