NEW DELHI: BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) leader K Kavitha Today submitted a bail application to a Delhi court concerning a corruption charge related to the supposed excise scam, as per the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) allegations.

This legal maneuver occurred on a Monday, with expectations that the application would undergo judicial review the same day. The presiding figure in this legal proceeding is Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, who is designated for CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) cases. Earlier that day, Judge Baweja ordered Kavitha’s remand to judicial custody until April 23.

K Kavitha, who is the daughter of K Chandrashekar Rao, the former Chief Minister of Telangana, found herself in legal turmoil following her arrest by the ED, which led to her detention in Tihar Jail. The CBI, after concluding a three-day period of police custody-a term previously sanctioned by Judge Baweja-presented Kavitha before the court, signaling the end of their need for her custodial interrogation.

During the courtroom discourse, the CBI articulated to the judge that Kavitha’s further detention for custodial questioning was unnecessary. Advocates Nitesh Rana and Deepak Nagar, representing Kavitha, contended against the police’s request for continued custody. They argued that the justification provided was insufficient for her continued detention, especially since she was deemed no longer essential for further custodial interrogation.

In the course of the ongoing investigation, CBI officials had the opportunity to interrogate Kavitha within the prison confines, a measure permitted by a special court’s authorization. This investigative action follows the ED’s apprehension of Kavitha, aged 46, at her residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on March 15, spotlighting the legal challenges facing the BRS leader amidst the allegations of involvement in the excise scam.

EARLIER TODAY

A Delhi Court today ordered the judicial custody of Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha until April 23, following her involvement in a case scrutinized by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) linked to an alleged scam concerning liquor policy.

This decision came through Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Courts after Kavitha’s term in CBI custody, lasting three days, came to an end.

The CBI has identified Kavitha as a principal figure in the case, accusing her of withholding critical information known exclusively to her related to the liquor policy scam. The investigation body had initially requested a 14-day judicial custody for Kavitha to delve deeper into the matter and uncover the facts she allegedly conceals.

BREAKING | BRS Leader K Kavitha Seeks Bail in Delhi Court After Judicial Custody Till April 23

The CBI on Monday produced BRS leader K Kavitha, arrested in connection with a corruption case linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, before a court here.

The daughter of former Telangana chief minister K Chandrashekar Rao was arrested from Tihar Jail, where she was lodged after her arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

The CBI produced the accused before the court on expiry of her three-day police custody granted earlier by a judge.

CBI officials had recently questioned Kavitha inside prison after obtaining permission from a special court.

The Bharat Rasthra Samithi (BRS) leader was questioned about the WhatsApp chats recovered from co-accused Buchi Babu’s phone and documents related to a land deal, after which an amount of Rs 100 crore was allegedly paid to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in kickbacks to swing the excise policy for the national capital in favour of a liquor lobby.

The ED arrested Kavitha (46) from her Banjara Hills residence in Hyderabad on March 15.
