A Delhi court remanded Indian Youth Congress National President Udai Bhanu Chib to four days’ police custody in connection with the India AI Impact Summit protest. Police alleged he was involved in planning and monitoring the demonstration, calling it a “case of conspiracy.”
A Delhi court on Monday sent Udai Bhanu Chib, National President of the Indian Youth Congress (IYC), to four days of police custody in connection with the protest held during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 at Bharat Mandapam.
Chib was taken into custody for questioning on Sunday and was formally arrested on Monday morning. He was later produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) Ravi. After hearing both sides, the court remanded him to four days’ police custody. The Delhi Police had earlier sought seven days of custody for further investigation.
During the hearing, the public prosecutor strongly argued that Chib played a key role in organising the protest. Seeking custody, the prosecutor told the court,
“Right from the beginning, he has been involved and monitoring all the things. He has been monitoring, he has supported and has not given the passwords for his devices. It’s a case of conspiracy,”
the prosecution counsel said.
The prosecution claimed that Chib was the main person behind the protest and was supervising the activities of the party workers. The police also argued that access to his electronic devices was necessary for the investigation, and that he had not shared passwords, which was hampering the probe.
On the other hand, Senior Advocate Sanjoy Ghose appeared for Chib and opposed the demand for police custody. The defence argued that the request for custody was unnecessary and without strong grounds. Chib’s counsel submitted before the court,
“If they want to ask questions, that can be done without police custody,”
the counsel added.

The defence further informed the court that Chib, being the National President of the IYC, was not physically present at the protest site. It was also argued that protests often take place during major international events and that such acts fall within democratic expression.
The case relates to a shirtless protest staged by members of the Indian Youth Congress inside the India AI Impact Summit held on February 20 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. According to police, several activists entered the high-security venue.
Some of them removed their shirts to reveal T-shirts with slogans such as “PM is compromised” and raised objections to the India-US trade deal. They also shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and certain government policies.
The Delhi Police have so far arrested eight people in connection with the incident. The accused have been charged with breaching security arrangements and allegedly raising “anti-national” slogans inside the venue, which was attended by international delegates and stakeholders.
Last week, while denying bail to four of the arrested accused, JMFC Ravi had made strong remarks about the nature of the protest. The court observed that the actions of the protesters went beyond the limits of lawful dissent and negatively affected India’s global image.
In his earlier order, the Magistrate had noted that the protest at the AI Impact Summit was not simple disagreement but had serious consequences, as it affected India’s diplomatic image before foreign representatives.
The matter is part of a larger investigation into security lapses and alleged conspiracy related to the disruption of the India AI Impact Summit 2026. The Delhi Police are continuing their probe to determine the level of planning, coordination, and involvement of various individuals in organising the protest.
The case is likely to see further legal developments after the completion of the four-day police custody period, when Chib will again be produced before the court.
