The Telangana Government brought the Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026 into force, establishing a stronger legal framework to protect advocates from threats, harassment, intimidation and attacks linked to professional duties, while promoting fearless legal practice and strengthening the independence of the legal profession.

In a significant step for Telangana’s judicial and legal community, the Government of Telangana has brought the Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026 (Telangana Act No. 16 of 2026) into force today, June 2, 2026 where advocates have been provided with a stronger legal framework to safeguard them from threats, harassment, intimidation, and attacks arising out of their professional duties. The legislation is expected to strengthen the independence of the legal profession and ensure that lawyers can perform their responsibilities without fear.

The move follows an official notification issued under G.O.Ms.No. 41, and marks a major turning point in addressing long-standing concerns about the safety of advocates in the state.

The enforcement of the Act comes as a direct answer to years of sustained advocacy by bar associations and representatives of the legal fraternity. Advocates across Telangana have repeatedly drawn attention to a growing pattern of intimidation, physical assault, and malicious harassment linked to the professional performance of their duties.

By activating the law with immediate effect, Telangana joins a limited group of Indian states that have adopted a statutory and enforceable protection framework specifically aimed at safeguarding legal practitioners.

Key provision in the Notification

The notification states:

“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of section 1 of the Telangana Advocates Protection Act, 2026, the Government hereby appoints the 2nd day of June, 2026, as the date on which the provisions of the said Act shall come into force.”

With the Act now operational, it provides a structured legal basis for stronger action by law enforcement authorities against anyone who targets, harasses, or threatens advocates.

Notable expected outcomes of the law include:

  • Statutory safety safeguards: Advocates can now seek protection with clearer legal backing, including support to report threats and receive timely intervention.
  • Reduced interference in legal proceedings: The Act is intended to limit unlawful obstruction in judicial processes, including attempts to intimidate counsel appearing for either the defence or prosecution.
  • Enable fearless practice: Advocates will be able to represent clients and carry out courtroom responsibilities without fear of physical coercion or personal intimidation.
