NEW DELHI: In the RG Kar rape and murder case, Trinamool Congress (TMC) spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has issued a legal notice to the victim’s father after being accused of paying the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to “settle” the matter.
Two days ago, the father of the victim made a serious accusation, alleging that the CBI accepted money from Ghosh at its CGO Complex office in Salt Lake to drop the case. According to his statement to the media:
“CBI has botched up the probe after taking money from the state government. The matter was settled by Kunal Ghosh at the CGO Complex.”
Taking strong exception to these claims, Ghosh announced on the social media platform X that he had served the victim’s father with a legal notice:
“Despite my sympathies and respect for the victim’s father, I have sent him my lawyer’s notice. He should hopefully receive it by tomorrow or day after.”
The TMC leader has given the victim’s father four days from the receipt of the notice to either apologise publicly or prove his statements in court. Failure to do so, Ghosh said, would result in a defamation suit.
Ghosh rejected the allegations outright, pointing out that he himself has two ongoing CBI cases:
“You think I will go to ‘settle’ the RG Kar case with the agency? And will the CBI listen to me? Everyone knows that the BJP controls the CBI.”

The Investigation So Far
The RG Kar rape and murder case, which shocked West Bengal, is being investigated by the CBI. So far, the agency has indicted one accused in the case. The victim’s family has repeatedly alleged lapses in the investigation process.
This legal notice adds a new dimension to an already politically charged case.
- For the victim’s family: The move could intensify their legal battle with both the investigative agency and political figures.
- For Ghosh: The notice appears to be an attempt to protect his reputation ahead of any possible political fallout.
- For the CBI: The allegation of bribery, if pursued in court, may subject the agency’s investigation to further scrutiny.
