RG Kar Rape-Murder Case| Sanjay Roy’s Sister Says, ‘No Plan to Challenge Verdict’

On 18th Jan, A Kolkata court has found Sanjay Roy guilty of the heinous rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate medical trainee at RG Kar Hospital last year.

Kolkata: The elder sister of Sanjay Roy, the man convicted in the RG Kar rape-murder case, revealed on Saturday that the family does not plan to challenge the court’s guilty verdict. The decision was delivered by a Kolkata court, which found Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor.

Speaking to reporters in the Bhawanipore area of Kolkata, Roy’s sister, who preferred to remain anonymous, expressed her anguish.

She stated, “Please leave me alone. We are shattered.” She also disclosed that she had not visited the Sealdah court, where her brother was convicted under Sections 64, 66, and 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to rape, death, and murder.

Roy’s sister further remarked, “If he has committed any crime, he should get proper punishment. We don’t have any plan to challenge the order on our part.” She explained her personal circumstances, stating, “I am living in my in-laws’ house. I haven’t had any contact with my family since my marriage in 2007 while my mother is not well.”

Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, was arrested on August 10, 2024, a day after the tragic incident. The victim, a trainee doctor, was found dead on August 9, 2024, in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. The court’s judgment has brought attention to the severity of the crime and the legal actions being taken.

During the court proceedings, Anirban Das, the Additional District and Sessions Judge, made it clear that the verdict would be delivered in a highly secured, closed-door setting. This decision was taken to ensure the “paramount importance” of safeguarding the prime accused, Sanjay Roy. To maintain order and security, police officers cordoned off the entire area and escorted Roy into the courtroom under heavy protection.
