During the hearing, the special CBI judge questioned the agency for not providing all documents to Sandip Ghosh. However, the judge also scolded Ghosh’s lawyer, stating, “We’re not here to find faults with either side. This is not a political platform where you can raise your voice. You cannot speak like this against an agency. Submit your concerns in writing.” The court maintained that legal arguments must follow proper procedures.
Kolkata: The counsel for Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, accused the CBI of failing to provide all documents related to the chargesheet concerning alleged financial irregularities at the state-run hospital during Ghosh’s tenure.
Ghosh, who is currently in jail, is one of the accused in the case.
In court, Ghosh’s attorney, Joseph Rauf, stated,
“The CBI is consistently misguiding and misrepresenting the court. They must supply all documents and witness statements, which they have not done. The documents submitted on the first day were only 70%. Yet, the next day, the CBI claimed all documents had been provided.”

Rauf further questioned,
“Why are material facts being suppressed by the CBI? Some registers were not included. The CBI should receive a show-cause notice for this. They have not provided copies and have suppressed our emails.”
In response, the special CBI judge reprimanded Ghosh’s counsel, saying,
“We’re not here to point out faults on either side… This isn’t a political platform for you to raise your voice. You cannot speak against an agency in this manner. Please provide your concerns in writing.”
The CBI’s counsel countered, accusing Ghosh’s attorney of “always complaining” and asserted,
“He is having problems. No one else has faced issues. We will provide the documents.”
The judge then admonished the CBI, instructing the agency to supply the required documents immediately.
The judge ordered,
“Where are your scanned copies? If they are ready, provide them right now. Ask your representative to bring the documents,”
The court mandated the CBI to email the deficient documents and deliver them on a pen drive to the accused’s counsels by 4 pm on Monday.
Last Friday, the Calcutta High Court granted Ghosh and four other accused two days to review the documents submitted by the CBI, acknowledging the need for extra time to process the “voluminous documents.”
Dr. Sandip Ghosh, who served as the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from February 2021 until September 2023, is at the center of this investigation. His tenure at the institution has been marred by controversy, especially in light of his brief removal and subsequent reinstatement.
Dr. Ghosh was transferred in October 2023 but inexplicably resumed his role at the hospital within a month, a move that raised many eyebrows. His position at the hospital continued until a tragic incident occurred the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor, which led to his removal from the post.
The incident involving the trainee doctor further complicated Dr. Ghosh’s tenure, prompting his immediate removal from RG Kar Hospital. However, in a swift and controversial decision by the Mamata Banerjee-led government, he was reinstated to a similar position at the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMC) within hours of his removal.
This decision triggered widespread backlash from CNMC students, leading to Dr. Ghosh being placed on indefinite leave pending the ongoing corruption investigation.
