Today, On 6th December, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar ordered an investigation following the discovery of currency notes allegedly found on MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi’s seat. The cash was reportedly uncovered during a routine anti-sabotage check conducted after the House was adjourned on Thursday. Dhankhar addressed the incident in a statement to the House, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter. The probe aims to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure accountability.

A controversy arose in the Rajya Sabha today after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar reported that a bundle of currency notes was found near the seat of Senior Advocate and Member of Parliament Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi.

An investigation is currently underway, Dhankhar revealed.

In a statement to the House, he explained that the cash was discovered during a routine anti-sabotage check following the adjournment of the House on December 5.

The Chairman stressed that the situation is being handled according to legal and parliamentary procedures.

He stated,

“I hereby inform that during the routine anti-sabotage check of the chamber after the adjournment of the House yesterday, a wad of currency notes was apparently recovered by the security officials from seat number 222, currently allotted to Sri Abhishek Manu Singhvi, elected from the State of Telangana for the term 2024–2026. The matter was brought to my attention, and I deemed it necessary, as per practice and ordainment, to ensure that an investigation takes place in accordance with the law, which is now underway,”

In a video statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Singhvi expressed his astonishment at the allegations.

He explained,

“I am quite astonished to hear about it just five minutes ago. I had not heard of it before. I entered the House yesterday at 12:57 PM, and it adjourned at 1 PM, just three or four minutes after I arrived. From 1 to 1:30, I was in the canteen with Mr. Ayodhya Rami Reddy. I had lunch and left Parliament at 1:30. So my total time in the House yesterday was three minutes, and I spent thirty minutes in the canteen,”

He emphasized the need for cooperation in investigating the allegations, questioning how someone could place items on any seat in Parliament.

Singhvi remarked that the situation would be comedic if it weren’t so serious.

He stated,

“I find it bizarre that such issues, in politics, are raised. Of course, there must be an inquiry into how someone could place anything anywhere in any seat. It implies that every MP should have a seat that can be locked, with the key kept at home. If this were not tragic and serious, it would be comic. I believe everyone should work together to get to the bottom of this. If there is a failure on the part of the security agencies, that must also be thoroughly examined,”
