From Comedy Icon to Tihar Inmate, Why Rajpal Yadav Surrendered to Tihar Jail in the Rs 9 Crore Cheque Bounce Case Explained, Highlighting the Legal Battle, Court Orders, Financial Dispute, and the Events Leading to His Final Surrender

Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav sent to Tihar Jail after the Delhi High Court denied his final plea for relief in an ongoing case concerning cheque bouncing and loan default.
He has been ordered to serve a six-month sentence related to outstanding payments that have accumulated to nearly Rs. 9 crore.
This legal issue dates back to 2010 when Yadav borrowed approximately Rs. 5 crore for his production project, Ata Pata Laapata. Over the years, due to interest, penalties, and late payments, the total debt increased to close to Rs. 9 crore.
To address the owed amount, Yadav issued cheques that subsequently bounced, leading to criminal action under laws pertaining to cheque dishonor.
Loan defaults are typically classified as civil matters; however, the Delhi High Court expressed strong disapproval of the continuous disregard for court commitments in this case. Yadav received numerous extensions over the years to repay the stipulated amount in instalments.
Nevertheless, the court noted his consistent failure to meet these obligations, despite making partial payments and offering reassurances.
Earlier, On February 4, 2026, the court dismissed a “mercy plea” requesting an additional week to secure funds, highlighting that Yadav had not fulfilled approximately 20 prior commitments.
The judge pointed out that the law favors compliance over contempt and criticized the actor for displaying “scant respect” for judicial orders.
The High Court notably condemned his behavior as “deplorable” and instructed him to surrender, denying any further leniency. The court emphasized that being a celebrity does not justify receiving special treatment, and that repeated violations of legal commitments necessitate firm action.
After his last request for an extension was denied, Rajpal Yadav reported to Tihar Jail on February 5, 2026, to begin his six-month sentence. Prior to this, he appeared in court that same day, where his attorney proposed a new payment schedule along with a fresh Rs. 25 lakh cheque.
Nevertheless, the judge declined to rescind the surrender order, stating that the court needed to balance compassion with discipline and could not create “special circumstances” for an individual from the film industry.
Rajpal is recognized for his roles in films like Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Waqt, Phir Hera Pheri, Partner, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Hungama, and Chup Chup Ke, among others.
The actor has Priyadarshan’s comedy horror movie Bhooth Bangla coming up, featuring Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi. This film is set to hit theaters on April 10.
Additionally, he will appear in Welcome to the Jungle, directed by Ahmed Khan, which also stars Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Raveena Tandon, Disha Patani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Arshad Warsi, Paresh Rawal, and Johnny Lever, among others. This film is scheduled for release on June 26.
Actor Rajpal Yadav surrendered before Tihar Jail authorities after the Delhi High Court refused to grant him more time to repay dues in multiple cheque-bounce cases.
- Yadav is facing seven separate cheque-bounce cases with a total liability of nearly Rs 9 crore.
- The Delhi High Court had directed him to pay Rs 1.35 crore in each of the seven cases.
- The court also ordered that the amount already deposited with the Registrar General be released to the complainants.
These cases stem from a Rs 5-crore loan taken in 2010 from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to fund Yadav’s directorial debut film, ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. The film’s box office failure led to the loan remaining unpaid.
After the court denied his request for additional time to clear the dues, Rajpal Yadav surrendered to jail authorities, resulting in his incarceration at Tihar Jail.
